If this site was running vB I would not have joined.

Would not have registered, would not have joined [N], would not have set up Mumble, L4D, or TF2 servers for [N]. Would not have contributed a damn thing. Hell, I might have even stopped playing on the servers.

I hate vB that much. It drives me nuts. It is a PITA for me to work with, the overall interface presented to visitors is NOT intuitive for me. I do NOT "know" what to do or where to go when using it. It makes NO SENSE to me when I am in it, and when I have admin rights it is even worse.

Just because you feel it is the best thing since sliced bread in forum software does not mean that others are going to agree, I am a case in point.

Edit: And yes, I have LEFT communities, even told them they couldn't post stuff I contributed, out of hate of vB when they switched to it. Including gaming communities. I am not guaranteeing an exception here. The only reason I even registered on the steam forums was because they threatened to take away the mailing list, and I visit it only when looking for help on something valve-related I am working on (like mapping or running a server) and have issues.

It is $180 for an owned license, meaning you own it. You get free updates for one year, then you have to pay for updates every subsequent year. And I've never had a real issue with security with the system (back when I moderating a popular forum). Tongue

I dunno, I think it is worth it.

Yes. You get updates for one year, then you have to renew the "owned" license after that year if you want updates again.

Also, I'm glad that the "popular forum" you moderated had no problems with security, but if you run an outdated version (because you don't want to renew your license or pay 100$ a year) you were just lucky.

A friend of mine pointed out that I should clarify a couple of things with my hated of vB.

First off, most vB installs (INCLUDING valve's) have major issues for me on half the machines I might check them on. Search does not work, at all, menus fail to function, on a couple of machines I have never been able to get the login or registration forms to even SUBMIT. This is with standard browsers on what should be considered standard operating systems, including windows but mainly on linux. This means that the vB forums are USELESS to me most of the time.

This REALLY pisses me off on the sourcemod forums in particular. I only joined there because I had issues with getting something to work, and I had to go to my desktop to do it because my laptop wouldn't work.

Second off, even when I CAN use the basic features (AKA, I have sat down on a windows box, with IE, with all of the things I load to keep general annoyances at bay turned off, and half the time have crossed my fingers before hitting enter) I can't deal with the way they lay things out. It doesn't make sense to me. I don't think that way. And if that isn't enough, it is ambiguous at times as to what exactly you are doing. Depending on where you click you see different things, but it is the same basic information.

Third off, when configuring things (not even going to touch admin stuff, this is just user level) they either put too little on a page or too much, which irks me, and makes it HARDER for me to find the stuff I am looking for. And that is WITHOUT the fact that disabled features (the calendar most commonly) are usually still linked to all over the place, yet do nothing when you click on them but tell you that the feature is disabled. Or that you don't have access. IF I CAN'T DO IT, DON'T SHOW ME IT.

Fourth off, from a "would I ever use it" point of view, the pricetag ($100-$180 for the first year, $40-$100 for the second year on) is a bit high for me. I couldn't justify spending $100 to $180 for any community I was trying to set up, and anything I already HAVE set up I have invested too much customization in code-wise to deal with it.

Fifth off, the way they code a bunch of things I HAVE tried to customize in the past drove me nuts. I was able to do the same thing in SMF and IPB in half the time. With SMF the "half the time" included converting the vB site to SMF.

And now, fully and totally annoyed at all the thought I put into it, I am going to go tell my friend that if he thinks I need to elaborate any more he can go do something I probably shouldn't say here.

All the sites I know that run vB have got hacked before =)  Although I like the idea of a fund raiser, I would rather it go towards something that is broken, or at least needs fixed, or towards the development of a new feature that I've neglected rather than throw money at a forum which would cause me to have to recustomize it.  I am not completely in love with smf, but I have hacked in the things I wanted to without a lot of problems, and I don't really want to rehack those into another forum software unless I have to.

I like the idea of a "buy crap a new computer" fundraiser, or a "pay crap's mortgage" fundraiser myself.  Wink

In all seriousness though, what's broken boss? Put out the word, maybe someone on here can help with stuff. Some of these people are (surprisingly) skilled at things other than killing me in tf2  Grin
