Title: Stuff we want
Post by: Grey Devil on January 04, 2013, 12:42:05 AM
Decided to make a thread to share current things that we might really want (regardless if we can afford them or not). I know that i sometimes research and obsessively compare and look at something, hoping really really badly that i can somehow afford it. I can't be the only one that gets this way xD

I tend to have very random, sudden obsessions that prove to be very costly for me. Who knew i'm high maintenance? This despite me being messy and immature.. Still most of these interests of mine are actually fairly classy, interesting, and/or awesome. At the moment i am lamenting the slow decline of my leather belt that i have used for over a decade, it is an extremely high quality, full grain italian leather belt that my mom got me when i was in high school. I have been pondering on replacing it with something new, and today i found 2 belts of good quality leather, and workmanship:

http://www.narragansettleathers.com/PelicanHookBelt.html
http://www.narragansettleathers.com/RifleSlingBelts.html

And in the same vein as my leather belt, my leather wallet is also in slow decline, and i've actually owned that for even longer. I've been considering spending some extra money and buying a nice and rugged leather wallet that will last me a lifetime, and i've been looking at the awesome Saddleback Leather website (i really also want their leather bags with a passion) and their products have lifetime warranty.

http://www.saddlebackleather.com/Shop/Wallets

(i like their medium bifold and their slim wallet)

I make a list every new year's eve for things I really want to buy in the next 12 months. Here's my latest one (yes, its quite a list):

Music Production / Sound Design needs

1) http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/komplete-8-ultimate/?page=2541 (or whenever Komplete 9 comes out)

2) http://cycling74.com/ --- da bauss of all my sound design needs

3) http://www.u-he.com/cms/zebra ---- most versatile morphing synth I've ever come across

4) A decent MIDI controller, cause my old piano/keyboard simply isn't cutting it anymore  :(

Sports Needs

1) New running shoes: http://www.adidas.com/us/product/mens-running-adipure-adapt-m/TD297?cid=G61964&breadcrumb=svZ1z13y9lZ1z13y9uZ1z1304q

2) MMA training gear, most likely a complete set by Hayabusa: http://www.hayabusafight.com/ca-en/

Gaming / Technical Needs

1) http://www.astrogaming.com/a40 (a30 works too)

2) Mousepad with good wrist support

3) iOS+ Android platforms for mobile dev projects ---- I use a crackberry right now (its actually cracked!)

4) Kinect for Windows -- for a computer vision project as I'm interested in pursuing a Master's degree (atleast) in this field in the future :)

I'll (perhaps) update this list as we move further along in the coming months :)

A new laptop. Something that could run The Witcher 2 on its highest settings. That'd last me a while.

And a smartphone. Not picky. Just a smartphone.

(I love threads like this because I like to try to find reasonable solutions to people's wishes/problems.  :) )

@Sharpevil: First of all, if you want a computer that can handle Witcher 2 at highest settings, you should probably pass on a laptop.  According to notebookcheck.net, none of the highest-grade graphics cards currently on the market can handle its Ultra setting with a decent fps rate, though an elite few can exceed 40 fps on High setting. So if you want a rig to handle that game on that setting, you're going to want to budget at least a thousand dollars (my guess), more if you want someone else to build the machine for you.

Current laptop graphics cards, organized by tier: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

A good laptop. And my wedding, I would also like that... Both are expensive, so both are probably going to be put off.

As for me, my wish list stuff is cheaper, but I rarely bite the bullet and buy the things I really want. Like:

1. Talisman board game, 4th edition
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/toys-games-talisman-revised-4th-edition/18172317?ean=9781589944626

2. A complete set of D&D 4th edition "power" books, six $30 books in all

3. A rolling tool chest/case for my roleplaying games and parts. I currently use a backpack that carries my laptop, one expanding file of maps, another expanding file of character sheets, a plastic snap-lid tray for counters, two bags of dice, and a pouch for pencils and markers. But when I use cardboard tiles to construct a map, I need a portable method to move them that won't require a 20-minute setup time.

@Sharpevil: How about this? It's got 12 GB DDR 3, 750 GB HDD, can play Blu-Ray discs, has an i7 at 2.4 GHz, and much cheaper than many other laptops with top-tier graphics card.

It's gonna be a while before I can get a laptop. I'll need to have a job, and have had it a few months. Once I've saved up a thousand or so, though, it'll be on.

I would like a PS Vita
Some money for the fabric to finish cosplays would be awesome too.

I've never done a chat D&D session. It sounds fun. My group of friends have been using Rift and Pathfinder core rules for a year, but I still miss my elf ranger.

Kit would like....a kitten. Because why not. (I can't have one in the apartment sadly)
I'd also like LCD Soundsystem to reunite and play one more concert, but that's not happening either.

Realistically speaking besides a kitten, I want a moped/scooter thing.
(also, a ticket to the west coast/London ;D)

I'd like:
- A new computer.
- To go to Japan again.
- To be able to create pixel art.
- To be able to write music.
- A violin.
- A sanshin. (Instrument) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Shamisen-Superior-Fake-Snakeskin-SANSHIN-Set-/310449273525 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Shamisen-Superior-Fake-Snakeskin-SANSHIN-Set-/310449273525)

If you do get a toaster, do yourself a favor and don't get a unitasker. Get a decent midsized toaster oven, spending a bit extra on a good model will make toasting/baking easier and more enjoyable. You can in fact bake in it from pizza, bacon, to potatos, to roast  (and pastries), and toasting is easy as well when talking about bread or reheating leftovers (need to reheat french fries? hey it actually works in a toaster oven).

I have a toaster. 2 slots, 7 settings. Special buttons for bagels and frozen stuff. Seen me through some tough times, never let me down. Easily-detached crumb tray, so easy to clean. Sitting on my counter right now, set to 6, white plastic and dull metal. The elements may have some crumbs stuck behind them, but you overlook the little stuff like that.

Never forsake your toaster, kids. You'll never have a better friend.

Legend of Zelda: Hirule Historia - Limited Edition is something that i desperately want. Sadly only 4000 were made, and i was hoping to snag one off Amazon when they went on sale and i kept checking them but they either sold out instantly or they never actually went on sale through the site.

If i were to buy one off a reseller i'd be looking at spending between 175-200 bucks for it. Though i might eventually just break down and get the standard print version of the book, which is only 20 bucks or so. Still... That limited edition looks mighty fancy, and i do love collectibles.

I also really wanted a Legend of Zelda 3DS bundle back when they came out last year... or the year before (i forget when it came out). Should've gotten it ]: a mint-in-box bundle is around 400 bucks. Oh wells, not spending that much on a 3DS.

I just bought this:

Been looking for a cool Wario toy for the longest time, and my brother and I noticed that a gaming shop had two of these in their front display. They didn't seem to carry anything like it in the store and we casually asked if they were on sale, and found out that they actually were [: we both got one and i'm pretty happy about it.

I've been really torn between a Nexus 7 and an iPad Mini.  I've got an iPhone already, so I don't have to re-buy all the apps.  That said, the Android OS is a little bit more geek-friendly (I know how to custom ROM them, etc) for work.

Opinions?

I would rather go android. mostly because you can run anything on them, even unofficial apps. Plus the ability to customize your phone is nice

Well, I'm locked into the iPhone for awhile, and I'm pretty okay with that.  Stability reasons, plus... it's an iPod, so yeah.

As far as the tablet, I'm leaning pretty heavily to the Nexus 7.

The latest versions of android are very stable, even with all the OEM junk added into them (which the nexus devices do not have). Even if it isn't, there are pleeeeeenty of ROMs to use.

I've had my phone lock up on my twice since i got it last year, but usually when i was heavily multi-tasking. Other than that i've never had any actual problems with my Adroid phone, so i'd say stability is pretty great unless you're constantly running weird apps and custom software on it.

Currently have a Galaxy S3...debating if I should either buy a Nexus 7 to add to my Android collection, or as the ads say, get the best of both worlds (tablet/phone) and get a Galaxy Note 2

Ended up getting a Nexus 7 a week after posting this. No regrets at all, I use it just about every day. Great for multi-tasking, music, movies, e-books
I love my Nexus 7. I don't use it as much as you do, but it's a huge step up over my playbook.

im also rocking a Blackberry Playbook. i just use the browser. I want a Microsoft Surface but im probably not going to buy one.

This probably comes as no surprise, being Microsoft, but many users are very unhappy with Windows 8--mostly because of the expected "WTF How do I even use I have no idea what I'm doing" from trying to figure out how to do old processes in new ways. (Because if people readily embraced change and the unfamiliar, we'd all be using Dvorak keyboards.) And many of you heard how The Gabe slammed it earlier for causing sales to go down instead of up.

Yeah, it's designed to work best with a touchscreen. And now that Microsoft is making tablets, perhaps there giving a one-finger salute to all other computer manufacturers now (well, more blatantly than ever before). But I have no reason to change from what works unless one of two things happen: it fixes/improves on previous shortcomings, or it offers new features and makes them obvious. Microsoft was more concerned with goofy tablet-slapping than actual communication of its software content. /rant

After this whole "appendicitis" episode, all I want is to get better that way I can finally drink something to kick off my 21 years of living despite my history of staying in hospitals and surgeries and nearly dying.

That's merely a wish. What I absolutely want is food. Something with meat. I'm hungry.

Good question:  A lot of expensive games and a few not so expensive.  Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3 would be nice, but they're $$$.  Mark of the Ninja looks really cool and it's less $$.  Then again, everyone should have ToeJam and Earl on their wishlist.  That game rocks.

Also i watch Gaki No Tsukai. Particularly the Batsu (punishment) game, most people know them from their bit Silent Library or the 24hr Tag. Anyway, i found out that a website in japan is selling 2 action figures based on two of the comedians (Hamada and Matsumoto) and i really want them... too bad they run for about 300 bucks a piece and they are sold in Japan.

I have the opposite problem.

I want less hours that way I can actually do shit during the summer and not spend the entire 3 months of it at the store because kids decide to take off nearly 2 weeks in vacations each god-forsaken month. My schedule's so inconsistent whenever I want to have plans I can't because people have already taken those days off and when I don't have plans I get ALMOST 4 DAYS OFF IN ONE WEEK. I just want enough money to pay my phone bill and to just hang around my town. I don't care if I barely leave/adventure anymore I just want to have a life......

Or at least a consistent schedule. Give me these set days off and i'll work the rest. Ugh.

This, literally this. My fiancee told me she is uneasy now because my tool cabinet (a cabinet in the entertainment center) won't close completely. There is all kinds of chemicals down there, and I just bought a saw.
I am a DIY person, and a CO2 reactor for an aquarium wasn't going to make itself!

Not to mention I really want a backyard to grill or whatever.
I've bought so many charcoal grills over the years.. Without a place to store it, it gets used once at like a park or something, then into the trash.

So my mouse is starting to quit on me. The braided cable has been kinked for years and the power in it has started to cut out if resting in certain positions... doesn't happen often but seems like it's time to get a new mouse. I currently have a Logitech g500 and i looked around, Logitech is selling an updated version of it called the g500s (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJD4HD2/). Looks nice but at 60 dollars i'm gunna have to wait for some sort of discount online ]:

On the same note. My previous tower fan died during the tail end of the summer and i'm looking to replace it with a newer, fancier version (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RL1WNQ). Again, i don't have 54-60 dollars to spare on it and i've been waiting for a decent discount since summer ended to no avail (unless i buy refurbished or returned models, and fuck that.)

And lastly i've been wanting to buy the Venture Bros season dvd/blu-rays. Price has also been a contention there ]:

For league of legends.

I got mine on sale from some site. I believe it was no official box but it was a good deal. I use it for TF2 only. I wish there was more keys above the top row of keys or they would have made the dents for the home keys one row lower. I enjoy the number keys (1,2,3,4,5) as good weapon selection buttons and with this control pad you lose all those options and then have to find other ways to quickly swap weapons. I tried using the buttons to the top left and bottom left but luckly tf2 doesnt have many weapons that a character can carry that i only need 4 and so the top 4 on the left are my weapon buttons.  The button at the far bottom by the little controller is my mic key which is good cuz i wont push it accidentally and way out of th way. The button to the left of the controller i REALLY need to go out of my way to push and thats to drop the flag. I dont use anything special on it.. other than default.. but that screws up my regular keyboard play .. lets say on my laptop.. cuz the mic key i use on the pad is #6 on keyboard.

othewise i like it.. but i cant use it for games with lots of keys/options.

Title: Re: Stuff we want
Post by: Grey Devil on November 12, 2013, 12:54:21 PM
I enjoy my g500. Has 3 buttons on the side, and the scroll wheel tilt left/right also count as button presses. All of which i use all the time for browsing. Would be difficult for me to downgrade to having less buttons available to me, so the g500s is the way to go.

The braided cable is actually a point of contention for me, precisely because the cable + wire is more stiff and its prone to kinking and permanent bending. When my previous G5 died i used a spare crappy MS mouse with a regular wire and the cable on that took on way more abuse when i'd pack it in my bag and worked fine regardless. Because of that i will never use braided Logitech mice when i'm on the go, i'd rather use a cheap mouse or my drawing tablet.

(i've had 3 Logitech mice fail on me over the years solely because of the braided cable).

At the moment i really desperately want to buy Dark Souls 2 for the PS3 but can't afford it. Got a few big bills hitting soon and didn't work a lot of hours the past few weeks so saving up as much of my weekly paychecks as i can ]: gunna be a month or two until i can get the game. Pretty bummed about that.

There's also Bravely Default and Rune Factory 2 that i want still, but man... Dark Souls 2.

WE'RE REVIVING THIS THREAD YAY!

I want next month to be here already, dang it.

On top of that I need more hoodies. I love my Harvard hoodie but I want more hoodies!
More tshirts, more time to actually bum it out instead of being in khakis and collared shirts 24/7 :P

I need to get a Mjolnir pendant. Also some Norse design leather presses to stamp on my leather wrist gauntlets.

Also some tabbards for my jedi cosplay would be nice.

I'm kind of bad ]: ended up buying both Dark Souls 2 and the giant isopod plush. The isopod plush's seller restocked so i was able to buy iy for its original price of 60 bucks vs the reselling price of 117 bucks. Also i just found out that if i link my Chase rewards card with Amazon i can use my points on there, so i just bought DS2 for 25 bucks. Need to get the CE strategy guide at some point.
