Title: **post pics of your rig thread**
Post by: Randall | xdarthveganx on December 11, 2008, 01:24:41 PM
I thought there was one of these already but couldn't find it. Mods can we sticky this so people can post up pics? I will get a new shot of mine a little later!

Yeah i know for sure we have a thread or two of this but i believe they were both posted up in the Off Topic forum. I'll sticky this one instead since it makes sense to have it in this forum.

Taken on my cell phone => shitty quality.

Issues:
  • Glare from window in heat of battle
  • Router/Modem-thing prevents mouse from full range of movement
  • Random shit all around keyboard causes frustration in heat of battle
  • Random ass bar gets in way of long, sexy legs

I wish I had an actual desk. :P

Points of interest in Scott's pic. Two big ass beer glass cups, large lava lamp and a large can of Jolt. Scott lives an oversized life.

True story. I had completely run out of money, my parents couldnt send me any for a week because they didnt have anything to spare as well, and long story short, i survived off of peanut butter for a week. At first it was peanut butter and bread, ran out of bread so i ate peanut butter and dry cereal, ran out of that so i ate peanut butter.

Every now and then i would eat some free food that they had on campus or i would crash a friend's house and eat some food. I also managed to live off of 7 dollars for food for a week D:

My setup, similar to NFreak in some ways (http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1783/img0077od6.jpg)
Left: Tower for my other computer.
24" moniter.  G11 keyboard. G5 and L4D mousepad, like NFreak :P I got mine before his though. Easy Button, like NFreak.

Other things to mention: Bookcovers, a puzzla in a corner, hacky sacks, Squirtle, money, barbeque sauce, pencil sharpeners in the shapes of cannons. Randomness.

Yeah the lycosa is an awesome keyboard. But I prefer my G5/G15 combo. And Grey its pretty awesome, especially for Nfreak since it has some macro keys on the side so he can have all his scripts binded to those keys

I guess i must be a minority regarding minimalistic keyboards. I had the hardest time finding a high quality full keyboard a few months ago that wasnt bulky and that didnt have needless buttons and other crap built into it. All i could find was cheap crappy keyboards or ones that looked dumb because of their design.

Anyways at the moment i dont really need a keyboard but i might look into it again whenever i get enough money for a desktop.

that is why I like the lycosa. Its thin, and doesn't have a bunch of keys I dont use and of course is back lit.

this Logi looks pretty good too....

It's like steam, I guess. Buy and download games to an account. And so do I, I just haven't bought any new ones recently.

Post by: Decade on January 31, 2009, 06:42:47 AM
Hey, when you can get a PSU that retails at $140 for $90, there's no reason not to have one. I was also chewing through 400watts like crazy, as weird as that sounds.

But on the serious side, it's part of my next build, E5200 clocked to the 3.X ghz range, 4gb G.Skill DDR2 800 and a HD4830 clocked to as close as possible to HD4850 clocks as possible.

dont plan for high clock speeds, get the chip and oc it, all chips have slight micro imperfections the help or hinder overclocking.

You wanna talk?  I live in West Los Angeles (not to be confused with West Hollywood).  I'm on Wilshire Blvd. and about a 10 minute drive from Santa Monica Beach.  On the other side of Wilshire, from my apartment, is Brentwood, an afluent neighborhood in which celebrities reside (I've seen Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart out on the street), and, in which there are numerous high-end grocery stores and restaurants.  My neighborhood is the kind of place where, when I've forgotten to remove the face plate to my car stereo and returned in the morning, it was still there, and none of my windows were smashed or pryed.

Wait, what were we talking aboot?

you can get a fan controller that switches off, or you can always get a non LED fan, or wire them up to a toggle switch.

Move the computer away from that wall. Along with a bit better cable management, you can definitely lower the temps.

Looking good man, you just need to learn a thing or two about wire management.  :P
I'm never letting you see inside my case. I think your head would explode  :D

Didn't we all start out with wires going EVERYWHERE? ;) ^_^

Move the computer away from that wall. Along with a bit better cable management, you can definitely lower the temps.

EDIT: Yeah. (http://www.media.phreakyourgeek.com/awesomecomp.jpg)
If someone can tell me how do manage them better instead of just putting them all in a clump in the corner, please do. (That wasn't sarcasm, I honestly could use some help with that. =P).

And actually, there's a lot of space behind it still, it's pushed as far back on the desk as it can go and it still hangs off.  There's a decent amount of space on every side though.

get some zipties and ziptie bases and run the cables behind the mobo.

honest before you do anything, open up the case and give me some REALLY clear shots of the inside, I can give you tips on what to do.

Clean and nice as that setup looks, it just seems so empty and unused.  If my desk looked like that, I'd feel uncomfortable touching anything for fear of disrupting the feng shui.

Throw in some empty soda cans, a few burn marks and drink stains on the desk, maybe a few dents in the wall from the corners of your case, and then it'll look like a real setup.

Also, make some nice Cheetos stains on the mouse around where your fingers usually rest.

That's funny how you can tell a Gigabyte mobo just by looking at the colors... didn't even need to see the logo printed on the South Bridge heat spreader.

Your workstation is too clean bro.  You're not a true nerd unless you're a slob.  I recommend you start by not using a coaster to hold your soda can.  We'll talk about food wrappers and random sheets of paper lying all over the place after that.

Hey, it could be a DFI...   if, you know...  anyone ever bought those.

You're not a true nerd unless you're a slob.  I recommend you start by not using a coaster to hold your soda can.

A good start would be to take that soda can, when it's empty, and leave it on your desk.  Then, get some more soda, drink it, and leave the cans on your desk.  Eventually, you'll have to find a more efficient method of storing these cans on your desk, like...   a pyramid (http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj224/eekozoid/CIMG1168.jpg). >.>

No like to keep clean man. Just easier to find stuff when you don't have to dig through shit.

As for the coaster well the desk is glass and that shit is a pain to keep clean so I do what I can to limit the wife telling me that i need to pic my desk up so she can use my rig. LOL!!

LOL.  The mobo I used for my very first ever build was a DFI LAN party board.  That was both the first and last time I ever used DFI.

But, no.  Gigabyte has there own crazy color scheme that is uniquely Gigabyte.  I think the only way to match it is with some paint and a tab of Acid.

the video card is a custom 8800gt that is totally modded but hidden inside the original body  ;D
video card mods:
aftermarket fan
copper ram sinks (lapped)
lapped heatsink and vga processor
ID7 thermal compound
18% (about) overclock hard set with bios flash of card

the processor is an E8400 currently stock 3.0G, getting a V8 in a few weeks so ill have the thing juiced, shooting for 3.5-4.0G

It is a AMD 2.7 Dual core Kuma that is at 1.43v at 3.2. Oh my temps really never reach above 37 C ever, even in game play.  That case moves air really well.  But i have tried to put it up more than that and it always blue screens.

I have read that others have gone up to 4.5 on air with the same chip but they don't list how they did it.

But it is really stable at 3.2 and that is really all that matters.

I plan on getting a 955 quad core and messing with it in the future.

In fact I tried earlier today to go to  4.0 at like 1.55v  and it got into windows and then blues screen.  Of course it is hard to tell cause I am running Windows 7 and some drivers do not work well with 7.

Better for half? No.. the video cards themselves were more than half at the time so, while i understand that every person that builds computers thinks that they can build better stuff for less than half what someone paid for something.. i've gotten to the point in my life where I dont feel like building computers anymore.. and it's worth the guarantee that shit's going to work.

It's a valid point, but you also have to consider that manufacturers always charge almost double what certain things are really worth. Putting 4gigs of ram on my laptop at the time was almost double what 3gigs was priced at.

There are merits to buying a computer instead of building it, plus some people just dont have the knowledge on how to spot a problem if something isnt working well or dont know someone that can lend a hand. But the ideal thing is to build one, hell if you have to bribe a friend 100 bucks to build one for you you'd still be saving money.

Unless something goes wrong with it, then there is a good likelyhood of being out a hell of a lot of money.

Buying a system with a warranty is often worth the extra cash. A lot of parts warranties are void for personal builds and non-certified builders, having a warranty which covers any failure of the system as a whole is a good thing.

I still buy large manufacturer computers for work PCs because if something goes wrong, I call them, they send me a replacement part, sometimes requiring I send the bad part AFTER I receive the replacement.

When shit goes bad on personal builds, at best I usually have to send them the bad part first before they decide if they will repair it, send me a new one, or decide the problem is my fault/not covered by warranty, and at worst just be told I have to buy a new part right from the get go.

If you have the money and don't mind spending a bit extra in exchange for security and not having to go through the hassle of building the PC and installing windows etc. yourself there's nothing wrong with it.

You're not generally ever really saving HALF the price of a computer by building one on your own, and in some cases you can actually get prebuilds cheaper because the manufacturers buy parts in bulk and don't pay anywhere near the same per piece price we do for say video cards.

There are merits to buying a computer instead of building it, plus some people Arbuckle just doesnt have the knowledge on how to spot a problem if something isnt working well or doesnt know someone that can lend a hand.

Maybe some day, I'll build my own computer.

Pretty much. Even buying the parts and having a local computer place put it together or something would save a lot of money.

Find someone who knows enough about computers to assemble on, and give you advice on what parts you need.
Then, feed them.

You might have to pay them eventually, but certainly less than an actual business.  Food is a good start, tho.  I suggest In-N-Out, if you have one in the area.

(I recently drove 20 miles, just to get to an In-N-Out.)

Not really. It might save you $300 or so, if you're lucky.

http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-x58-desktop.aspx?SysCode=PC-A51-X58&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
$1499

Build that exact pc, to those exact specs from parts for the same amount or less, you'll see it won't work out that much cheaper. The whole "building your own pc will save you have the price" thing is a myth. It will not. Not if you build to the same exact specs. It can save you money if you are willing to cheap out/leave out certain parts or have parts you can carry over and reuse, but it doesn't save that much overall if you are building a pc from scratch.

I've been both building my own PCs and buying retail packages and BTO since the days of DOS, and I'm a cheap son of a bitch. Do the math, I guarantee you that you aren't saving nearly as much as you think, especially if you start factoring in shipping and handling, time spent searching for the cheapest parts, time spent building the PC, installation etc.

It's all just a trade off. The build builders buy parts in bulk, they pay A LOT less than what we do. They can sell a PC built out of those parts at close to the same price we would pay for buying those parts individually and still profit.

Not really. It might save you $300 or so, if you're lucky.

1. $300 is a lot of money! :o
2. Compared to equivalent pre-built computers of the time, my current computer cost about $500 less.
3. Building the computer is half of the fun! :D

That's why you have to find someone who actually knows what they're doing.  Obviously, a person who's dedicated to pre-built computers isn't going to know how to build one, or where to find the best deals.  Another thing is that you don't want to build a computer to the exact specifications of a pre-built computer.  A lot of the time, because they're buying in bulk, some of the parts are crap just because that's what was available to them in large volumes.  It comes down to experience.
That's why you make offers of food to your local nerd. ;)

Actually, I think my case (http://www.modster-pc.co.nz/shop/images/Solo.jpg) looks very nice, and quite sleek.
Know why it was 25% off?  There was a very tiny little bit of paint chipped off of the bottom edge of the side of the case.  You can't even see it.

ROFL!
I built a computer inside a cardboard box, once.  Feisty little beast, that one.  (This was before the widespread manufacture of small form factor cases.  The box was chosen for size.)

Alien-ware is over price nice but over priced.  Like the others said you can build a rig that will perform just like an Alien-ware or an XPS for half the money and still be water cooled.  I have a buddy that spent like 4 grand on one of there laptops it is nice but for 4 grand I could go get a car for that or build an insane rig.  But on the other hand he can play L4D at like 120 fps on his laptop while we are just chillin in class and what not.  So I guess in that sense it was worth every penny.

Just about 2 weeks ago, I was upgrading my mom's computer here at work.  The new board wouldn't boot inside her old case because the way the case was designed wouldn't allow the board to ground properly and form a complete circuit.  So, rather than wait for a replacement case to load Windows on the new HDD, I placed the mobo on two anti-static mats and hooked up the PSU and all the necessary hardware and installed the OS while everything was spread out on the desk.  I had to use a flat head screwdriver to short the Power jumpers so I could turn it on.  So, when I gave her a spare case of mine, it was all ready to go.  It's pretty cool watching a complete computer operate without a case.

Well it took me and a friend some time to figure out that the video card wasn't flush and other then to drive 30 minutes to the Fry's where i got it, we just got a zip tied it to the mother board. Its been like that for about 6 months now hehe.

Finally found my charger 3 months later  ;D

Here's my old PC. This is the old ugly PC (frankenbox) I was gaming on for about 5 years up until a month or so ago when I bought the new pc. Now it's mostly a torrentbox/file server.

And here's the current setup. Been busy with work so it's a bit messy, it's usually a lot neater.

There's a sofabed right a few feet behind the PC chair, but with all the fan noises and LED lights it's sometimes hard to sleep in the office  ;D

I actually find my PC fans to be somewhat soothing ambient noise.  The lights however, are a different story.  I find myself sleeping on the our futon in the office many a night because I get restless on Summer nights and keep my gf awake with my tossing n' turning.

I actually find my PC fans to be somewhat soothing ambient noise.

You just get used to it after a while.  My computer has been running about 95% of the time for the past 2 years.  I only turn it off to move it and clean it, or when I leave for vacations.
As of now, it's been on for 53 days, 19 hours, 21 minutes, and 3 seconds.

The rear exhaust fan has been spinning off axis for almost a year, and I've been too lazy to fix it, so it makes interesting noises from time to time.

@Crap: Is that an Optiplex on your floor?

Title: Re: **post pics of your rig thread**
Post by: Crap on August 10, 2009, 01:36:47 PM
@Striker
The new pc doesn't bother me at all, it's quiet as can be, but the old PC is a P4 with the generic (infamously loud) cooler and there are a total of 6-7 PCs and several other devices (raid, etc.) that can be going at once, so the fan noise can get pretty bad if a lot of stuff is going.

I sleep in the office during the summer because I crank the AC all the way down and my wife doesn't like it, so we sleep separate in the summer. She opens a window and sleeps in the roasting heat and humidity and I keep my office so cold that my glasses fog up when I leave the office in the morning  ;D

@eek
Nope, it's a dimension. 2.4ghz single core I think, haven't turned it on in awhile, can't remember exact specs, too many pcs lying around this house (at least 3 more in addition to the one's in my office, probably some in a closet somewhere I am forgetting too)  ;D

Actually no. Cell phones, toilets, bathtubs, air conditioners, etc. All super modern, cutting edge and full of useless frivolous features (my telephone, bathtub both talk for example) but Japan is behind on the computer scene. Most people get by with their cell phones for everything from email to online shopping, coupled with lack of space resulting from tiny apartments etc. has cut into the PC market bigtime here.

Even if you compare PCs from the major manufacturers (Sony, Toshiba, etc.) the models sold in Japan tend to be much lower spec than the same/base models sold in the U.S. (they are still selling PCs with only 512mb ram here in mainstream locations).

My new pc cost $2400 for the pc alone, not counting monitor, mouse etc. ;) Lovely, lovely i7 speed, 285, etc. etc.

My old pc, is pushing 7 years. The new pc is the only reason I am able to snipe at all. I'm not a great sniper, but I couldn't snipe at all on the old pc, too slow, too low frame rate, too terrible a ping, etc. =P

Yeah I have like 2000 into all my equipment and I run AMD and ATI.  Most of the cost was in the monitor, but now I am saving for a new rig 3 graphics cards and another 25.5 inch monitor.  Possibly liquid cool it as well have not decided yet, already started picking up parts lol.

It never ends.  You could have the best machine ever and then with in a week some one else will have something even better.

Looks like this, only I actually put the thumbscrew back where it goes, and I got rid of the mousepad because it's UGLY and FAT.

I also have the cord for my headset going around the other side of my desk, so it's less in the way.

I didn't need anything longer than this, I only use 2 monitors (24" and 27") and have a separate desk next to this one for non-pc deskwork. The other desk is at a different height than this one because it's easier for writing and tinkering than the height I have the monitors and keyboard on this one at.

Woohoo! new case and videocard came in the mail today.  Took me about half an hour to rip my hardware out of my old case and about 2.5 hours putting it into the new case.  Most of the time was spent making sure every wire was just so then zip tieing it in place.  New videocard went in with my old one in crossfire mode.

Case is a Coolermaster storm sniper and I'm now running a pair of sapphire tech hd 4850s.  Needed the new case to run the crossfire cause they put out a lot of heat and my old case only had 3 80mm fans.  The new case is running 3 200mm fans and a 120mm fan.

When/if I decide to upgrade I was planning on going that route too but by the time I've saved up the $2,000+ to upgrade my rig there will probably newer and better hardware available to consider.

We'll see...

Wow that mouse is bonkers, I'd seen it before but never really looked at the specs, I want.
I need.
I must have.

Being able to adjust dpi in increments of 25 is sweet for people like me who like to dial things way in, plus it's metal so hopefully it won't have the short lifespan of my logitech g5 (which I have revived from the grave once and expect to have to again), PLUS it has separate lasers for vert/horizontal movement.
Looks amazing.
Gimme.

for 800 bucks i managed to pick up an asus laptop and a 23 inch acer LED monitor. im excited cause its the fastest computer ive ever owned (sad i know, right)
basic specs on the lappy are:
intel i5 processor  2.3 ghz
6 gb ram 500 gb hdd
Intel hd graphics 300 -now heres where i see the one pitfall of this laptop. a few sites claim that this card is on par with some nvidia cards, and it seems to hold up fine... http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html
im using a really cheap mouse that i want to replace with a razor when i have the funds, but it works for now

im really happy cause this plays all my older games perfectly (the newest game i have is L4D1)
and i think its a really good price

Just realized I have pictures of my laptop online, and thought this would be a good place to share them:

My Laptop:
  • Review (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5406)
  • i7 740-QM (1.7 GHz)
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 160 GB SSD + 500 GB HDD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 M
  • 1080p 15.6" screen (144 dpi)

Unboxing:

Today:

(Quality difference is because the first was taken with a proper DSLR, and the second with my cell phone.)

i heart my 9 hundred case :) all the fans make it easier for me not to worry about cooling. I keep them all low. I think one of my HD fans is on medium. Plenty of room for future upgrades. my cable routing sucks though. I use to only have an exhaust fan and the CPU fan on back before the 900 case. Well lets just say that the hard drive will die a lot sooner if you dont cool it down a bit. I learned the hard way. When i saw all the fans the 900 had and the flow... i was sold :) I like quiet computers. Still when it does idle i makes a little hum. When the TV volume is low the pc will make me higher the tv a few more points so the pc is not interfering.

The mask was popularized by V for Vendetta (which is excellent), and then the internet ruined it.

It's running fairly well. Temps seem to cap out at 70 C for the GPU (that's what SpeedFan shows in the task bar, not watching the CPU so much). I'm not overclocking yet, as I had some initial stability issues. I think this is mainly because I'm running the Windows 8 Release Preview on top of a software RAID-5 (because I didn't notice the RAID mode switch in the BIOS until afterwards, which defaults to off). It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally the entire thing would freeze up. No bluescreen, no response to C-A-D, just whatever image was on my screen when it froze. Hasn't happened in a couple of days, but I'm probably just going to go back to Windows 7 when I switch over to a hardware RAID. Need to do that before PAX.

CPU Heatsink:
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2320140/IMG_20120801_220306.jpg) (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2320140/IMG_20120801_220306.jpg)

Heh, I was just looking at Newegg late at night and saw the heatsink. People in the reviews were warning about it's size. I was thinking, "How big could it possibly be?" I ordered low-profile RAM, just to be safe. It was warranted, because it barely fits in my case and sits just above the RAM. Works pretty well though.

The primary source of noise in my case seems to be the hard drives. They rattle a bit due to the slide-in mounting system. I've applied some poster putty to the screw things they sit on, but some of it's come off since I moved stuff around to swap out front fans. Need to reapply it.

I really should just clean up my desk so I can show you this thing running.

You can buy little rubber o-rings that your mounting screws go through like a washer.. they reduce hard drive vibration noise by about 60%.

Finally going to contribute here... sorry for the blurry picture, hands are shaking today. :/

So, from left to right:

* Printer
* (on the floor) New Nikon d5200)
* My movies, because Mrs. Kamo doesn't like action/sci-fi much
* Can barely see it, but I have a still-in-the-box Generation 1 Shockwave Transformer under there :D
* A roll of caution tape.  No, I don't know why I have it.
* Just got my 2nd 23" monitor (one on the right was a 19" square before)
* Aperature Science water bottle :D
* Computer itself, *yawn* boring.  ASUS Sabretooth Z77 mobo, i7 3770K proc, 16gb Corsair HyperX memory, and a buttload of drives for about ~3TB
* My 2013 Gibson Les Paul LPJ Deluxe custom model.
* The laundry basket. :)

So I said I'd do this when I had the 5th screen up and I had fitted my cat 6 cable up to my room, but life has gotten in the way and I am just going to post as is.

So let's see:
46" HD TV which I use with my PC for movies and my consoles which has my surround sound plugged in to it by fibre
3 27" monitors for my desk 1ms response time connected mostly by display port
On the shelf between the screens and to the left of the centre speaker is my capture card which I need to replace as it doesn't have a hdmi connection
To the left on the extended shelf there is my surround sound unit and my Wii U which recently replaced my pretty unused xbox 360 (a GoW 320GB one)
Gamecube on the right because I wanted to play pikmin :D
KB: CM Storm Quickfire TK, great little Cherry MX Red Switch
Mouse: Zowie EC2 eVo
Headset: Steel Series Siberia V2

Finally on to the PC that is behind my HP PS/2 KB that I have from work for testing:
Case: Corsair Vengeance C70 Black
CPU: i7 3930k (3.8GHZ 6core :D)
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79
Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz (4x8GB)
Graphics card: Asus Radeon HD 7970 (Eyefinity6 4x display port, 2x DVI)
Cooling: Corsair H100i
PSU: Corsair RM850
Storage: SSD Samsung Evo 500GB, 1TB WD Green, 3TB WD Red
OS: Win7 Ultimate

Dunno if I missed anything, let me know if I did.

On the left side is my old PC that I have spare, it's just an x4 athlon I think and it has a HD6770 in it with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD

Well then, that's a lot of stuff.

Any questions? There will be a test ;P

How many monitors does one need?

@Kamo, I had that same exact copier at my office. I loved it. Wish I could print in color.
Also I think I have the same chair as you. Although mine is in storage. And Caution tape? Is that so you can declare that area disaster?

@Wolf I think you have enough stuff. Your such a geek but I think we all have a little geekiness to us, since we all clearly play TF2.  ;D

The BitFenix Prodigy is aesthetically excellent, but it is a definite pain for cable management.  I have since flipped the window panel to the opposite side of the machine so that I'm looking at more of the guts, rather than the video card.

I also recently built a server using the Fractal Design Node 304, which I'd be happy to show if folks are interested.

I wanted to get this bitfenix case but I had read reviews that claimed the feet/handles were crappy for carrying and moving around, I'd be using it as a LAN box, how do you find it?

This is more "my mess of things," not "my rig," but here goes. I am very messy, and not into photography, so you'll have to excuse the clutter and poor quality pictures.

list of things is from left to right, then top to bottom. (kinda like the scan pattern of a CRT)

For a mini-ITX, it's quite large, and the "handles" aren't really for carrying.  I'm not sure I would suggest lugging it around either.  I got it because I've been into red lately, and it's a beautiful case.

Ah I'd seen bitfenix describe them as handles, I guess I will likely go for a laptop for LANs instead, unless that Lian-Li briefcase PC case comes down in price.

I have a Dell Inspiron N4010, hardly a rig, but I want one of those sexy towers with the clear sides, glowy things and multiple monitors, but the reason everything is on my bed is because I have no room for a desk in my....room. So yay ordinary laptop that isn't for gaming at all. Also a few notes:
1- thats the thread on the screen as is a common thing in the pictures.
2- those are my sexy legs on the bottom
3- I love salt&vinegar chips.

I would not be able to manage with that small of a desk. I'm 6'4" and that would not agree with me, nonono.

yeah my room at home sucks. Since last year though I moved the case on the ground. I have an apartment during college and it's much better.
