We should probably make a post in that thread, or make a separate thread that has the template for people who want to join N. I know several people that wanted to join N that were confused and couldn't find the template easily.

nice friggin post man. gave you some karma for that beast.

Still a work in progress. Just wanted to get all the info spread out all over the place in 50 different stickies in one place and something we can update when things change (there are probably 15 different threads on the sticky rule alone  ;D).

Updated quite a bit today. Rules section is done except for fixing any typos, or making any changes (I think octo has gone over it briefly and made a couple) or corrections that are pointed out.

Added a progress thing just so people don't point out that there is no donation info yet and stuff like that.  ;D

Any comments, corrections, suggestions on the finished sections is welcome. There's probably a million typos, so pointing those out is helpful.

* More references added. Few typo and spelling corrections.

*Examples added to 10. Do not engage in any other excessively disruptive behavior.

Question: Is the secondary spawn drop-down on 2fort part of the no-stickying spawn rule?

There was a discussion a few nights ago and some said yes, some said no.  The drop-down is both see-through and has blind spots, hence the confusion.  So I'm just wondering if we can make a decision on that and include it in the rules.  :)

I believe it's kosher to sticky there. Plus it's also a high-risk area for the demo doing the camping since they could get flanked from another direction pretty easily. I occasionally place stickies on there as a precaution while i'm trying to make my way into the enemy base but the majority of the time you'll find yourself being attacked from elsewhere or walking away from that spawn area so you can no longer see if there are enemies dropping down, or walking by that spot.

I'm not a regular 2fort guy, so I dunno specifically, (it took me a minute just to figure out what door you were talking about  ;)) but in general the rule only applies to the shutter style spawn doors.

Since the spot you are talking about (I think?) doesn't actually have a door on it which directly leads to spawn, I think it'd be okay, but I dunno, I can't recall ever actually running into the situation in game the 3-4 hours I play 2fort in a year  ;D

I think the door in the basement by the intel room is generally okay as well, since its not a spawn, but just a resupply room (to the best of my knowledge).

I'm talking about the secondary spawn where there are two exits.  One is an opening in the floor where you can drop down; the other leads to the sniper deck a.k.a. battlements.

Another point that was brought up was that there's a bit of a ledge at the drop-down, and it's possible to hide stickies under the ledge.  So yes you can see through the exit, but you can't always see the stickies because of the angles and blind spots etc.

The only spawn exits that stickies are really disallowed on, to my knowledge, are shutter doors. Anything else (Including see-through grate doors) is fine.

Yep, you can sticky the resupply room to your heart's content. It's not a spawn point and the people that hide in there do so at their own risk against a demo.

and the demo doing it has to worry about more than one spot, as people don't have to spawn right there and walk out. They can come from many directions down at the resupply.

Also, if you do find yourself stuck in the basement resupply be aware that you can switch classes while in there and you'll instantly be transported into one of the main spawn areas. Might not be ideal, but it can be useful at times.

Add info about raffles, lottos and scams to rules under advertising section.
http://www.tf2newbs.com/forum/index.php/topic,6144.msg103154.html#msg103154

Generally if it's not a Newbs admin running it, don't do it, don't participate in it. There's nothing we can do to help you get items back if someone rips you off. If you want to run some sort of even like this, you need to talk to an admin and it has to be cleared with Octo first.

Title: Re: Newbs Community Info Questions & Comments Thread
Post by: TheJib on October 03, 2011, 09:32:56 AM
just never really had the crowd for one. If a few people really wanted one I'm sure we could figure something out, but I think we tried in the past and it didn't do too well.

Title: Re: Newbs Community Info Questions & Comments Thread
Post by: Crap on October 03, 2011, 09:54:14 AM
We had one, it sat empty all the time so we shut it down.

The problem with arena is that, until you get enough people, the person(s) starting it just sit there in spec unable to even run around the map to amuse themselves, so no one ever wants to start them.

See here for the 2nd (at least) attempt at having a newbs arena server:
http://www.tf2newbs.com/forum/index.php/topic,2731.0.html

Title: Re: Newbs Community Info Questions & Comments Thread
Post by: Grey Devil on October 03, 2011, 12:24:35 PM
Yep. The 1st arena was actually sponsored by Ggglygy and myself, but it was too boring trying to start it. There's definitely a crowd for arena out there, but takes more effort than most other game-modes to keep going. I'd rather put in the time and effort to keep a rotation server going.

If admin was removed/moved from a server you won't have a reserve there anymore either unless you paid for one separate (reserve slots are actually handled by an admin flag).

As for knowing which ones you have one on, you'd have to ask octo. I could tell you for individual servers when you are on the server, but you'd have to join every server for me to tell you yes/no for each =)

Regarding your latest update (http://www.tf2newbs.com/forum/index.php/topic,6894.0.html), Crap:

Will I Get a Reply to My Protest?

...

If a person gives enough of a shit that they ask to be unbanned in a nice way, they have a good chance of being banned (depending on the reason for the ban), and most people stay unbanned if they curb the disruptive behavior.

should be "unbanned"

Hi, I was reading the rules, and I was wondering, what does "civilian heavy" mean? And what happens if you press F10 in the middle of a game?

Title: Re: Newbs Community Info Questions & Comments Thread
Post by: Safety! on June 18, 2012, 09:08:36 PM
Civilian Heavy is an old glitch/exploit that makes you useless to your team.  Google it if you're curious, just don't grief with it server-side.  If it's even still possible anyway.  F10 in TF2 quits the game.  It's telling someone to alt+f4 basically.  But most people don't know what it does, so... Yeah.  Not nice.

Not at present. We've had things in the past that valve ending up breaking and there have been plans to add things, but they require skills and time and time is something the people with the skills often don't have so it's just reserves for now  :)

RE: High-Five Glitch

While it isn't a rampant issue, I was wondering what the current stance is on the high-five glitch. On the occasions someone uses it, I am at a disadvantage, because I can't see a heavy begin to spin-up, or I can't see if a soldier is using his RL or a shotgun, making reflections as a pyro and tactics as a scout a bit tougher. Some admins have been cool with it, but over the past year or so of playing on #8 I've also seen a couple of notifications using the admin-voice-of-God requesting players to cease the glitch.

Personally, I'd like to see some sort of consistent, cut-and-dry way of approaching this, whether it's allowed or disallowed. But for the record, I typically quit a server when an otherwise mediocre player is using this glitch to his/her advantage in order to gain the upper hand on the opposing team.

I am at a disadvantage because I don't know much about it.  Can they cause it on purpose?  It is random/accidental?  But I agree with you that it's an unfair advantage, and I will kick someone for it, once they come back in, it is gone.  I always warn to stop doing it first, but I'm not sure if they can stop it, once it starts!!!

It is very possible to force the high-five glitch, unfortunately it's also completely possible to do it accidentally. What's even more annoying, sometimes it doesn't show up for everyone, which makes dealing with it as an admin a bit more troublesome (if I can't see it I'm going on someone else's words). It's a bit bothersome as it screws with the weapon models and can in some cases give certain classes an unfair advantage (spies are hindered badly by it, the high five stance works through disguises)

Is there a client-side fix for it (a la recording a demo for invisible players)?

Hello. I'm new to your tf2newbs website but have been an active member of your servers.

I just wanted to say that your Jump Server # 23 needs more admins / Active admins.

That server is my main Jump server and i see a lot of the time ( especially today --- November 11th 2013) that they're people breaking the rules all the time or trying to spam trade and especially kill people constantly.

I think you guys should look into getting more admins because me personally i get a little annoyed when i try to tell people / other people try to tell people to follow the rules..

Thanks and have a nice day

Thanks for the info, spez.  You can join the tf2newbs chatroom at the link up above (top-left, where it says "X in [N] Chat"), or feel free to add me (http://steamcommunity.com/id/kamodius/home/).  If I'm online, I'm always happy to help.

I'd also like to suggest for the #23 server as well. That you guys add a time limit of sorts, because right now the server stays on one map in till it gets RTV'd and most of the time no one stays long enough to RTV so I always end up playing / seeing the same map over and over all day because it doesn't get rtv'd, and a lot of the time i always see people complaining it's always on the same maps

Thanks Spez

The best way to do it on a jump server is to have an automatic vote every 30-60 minutes.  It pops up, but everyone on gets to vote.  It can be extremely frustrating to work hard on a jump map, and make progress only to be switching maps before you finish it, etc.

I understand that, but I practically only play on #23 Server and I've seen it on Jump _ Adventure for hours on end and no one RTVS they just leave once they get Frustrated or beat the map.

I think maybe putting the vote timer on for an hour would be really nice. This way people who are really good or bad don't have to stay on an easy / hard map, and this way we can have more people joining in the long run if they see the server is on a different map.

Would an intermittent in-chat popup that says something like "If you want to change maps, type rtv in chat" sound like a good idea? Let's people know about the function while not restricting map times.

That sounds like a good idea. This way people can RTV if they please, I can always tell you guys and gals that if this new pop-up doesn't work as intended too that you guys might need to figure another way.

I have an idea.  If we could make medics and engineers with building immune to team switch.  It sucks to lose a medic, and let's face it, medics are serving their team, they should get a medal, not autobalance!  And it really sucks when your team has an engy, who has the sentry central to your defense strategy and they get autobalanced and their buildings go POOF.  So if we could give those two classes autobalance immunity, that'd be great.  (I realize it COULD be taken advantage of, but it'd take some real attention to detail and switching all the time, etc, so I think it's worth a shot.)

Is there a way that for the jump servers you can make like a notice or a saying that pops up in chat saying " Type /s to save /t to teleport and /r to reset" Because me personally and i know a bunch of other people hate the chat being spammed with !t and !s at times and it's hard to read some ones message if they need help. Just curious and a suggestion

thanks

:)

I also 1 up this. Although there was a time I only reg'd the Jump servers but dont play tf2 very often now, It may not be a bad idea to broadcast the commands in chat, or maybe even how to bind them, (I have my commands binded, so I dont spam chat).

Thank you for the suggestion, as with the RL maps, toss up some popular suggestions and we will see if we can get them incorporated into our servers

Since Newbs is for the new players and beginners (as well as non beginners) I think it would be awesome to have something like a group class or something.  What I mean is if other more senior members are willing all of us beginners can get together with some people who know what they are doing so they can 'show us the ropes' so to speak.  Nothing fancy or advanced just the basics on how to get around, basic tips etc.  Writing them in the forums help a lot but sometimes it's great to actually see things in practice.

Sometimes I have difficulty explaining myself so if you need clarification let me know.

I know some of the more advanced players have done things like this in a 1on1 setting with some people.
Things like this might be helpful to the newer players too

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VPbmiHd2dw&list=PLEA3D29D4339FF185

Most of these are things that pro players use during their completions but a lot of the things they teach can be used in regular pub play on tf2.

If you have questions I can try to answer them for you if you need.

Awesome, I'll check then out. I learned the best way to learn is to just play, no matter how many times I get killed. Also playing on a low pop server helps.

Hey.

I asked for a couple maps to be put in to the rocket jumping servers and I'm curious if they are ever going to be put in. I do enjoy playing on the rocket jumping server but i feel that the server needs more maps. I find my self having to leave the server to go to another server to play different maps and I rather not have to do that because I enjoy the rocket jumping server you guys have and I'm one of the most active players on it.

Octo and the other admins have lives they tend to. Adding maps to the server is probably pretty low on the scale of things to do for newbs. Id give it a few more weeks then check back. I will however drop this thread link into octos steam chat to make sure he checks it out.

Actually I never saw the original post, I was out of town on vacation.  Do you happen to have download links for them?   you can add me on steam - http://steamcommunity.com/id/octodhd and message me them and I can get them put on tomorrow during the workday, if I have the links it doesnt take much for me to put them on the server

I figure I should follow up on this comment.  If people are interested, I can host a training / class session on a specific class if there's enough interest.  Feel free to add me at Master {N}uunsa (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197967848783/) and I'll put together a date that works for most people.  And if people are looking for specifics on learning things, let me know before / during the lesson and I can help go over that as well.

If you don't feel comfortable learning in a group, I can also offer to do 1 on 1 lessons.  It's up to you guys, but I figured I would offer my services if anyone's interested.

Just a minor correction I'd like to suggest for: http://www.tf2newbs.com/forum/index.php/topic,6889.msg111900.html#5

The image for Bad to Sticky shows a Resupply door even though the green text for Okay to Sticky lists the Resupply Room in 2fort Basement.

Thank you!

That is a main spawn door on badwater, the sign just says resupply, not a lot I can do about that.

Can giveaways that are completely free, with both no cost for entry and no third part verification be universally permitted? I say this as I would not like to have to ask an admin every time I do a give away for random reasons.

As long as there is no "buy in" or other cost for entry you are free to give away stuff as much as you want. The rule is mainly for raffles, etc. where people are required to make some sort of payment or "contribution" in exchange for a chance at a prize. They often end up being scams or just mismanaged, so we just completely disallow them.
