Introduction & Basics

The chatroom(s) are used to aid in the enjoyment of the game TF2 and other games, organize events, allow a common area for people that are active in the Newbs community to share knowledge/help each other out/generally chat about whatever strikes their fancy, and to provide players with a way to more easily locate and contact admins.

Rules

1. No racism/slurs/discrimination/hate speech/threats

Some things are never appropriate anywhere in the Newbs Community.
Racism, hate speech, and serious threats of real world violence aren't allowed in any way, shape or form anywhere in the newbs community and you will be banned from chat, forums and servers for using them. No warnings, no questions, no debate.
Making joking threats to friends is one thing, making real threats towards people is not allowed.
Don't make jokes about racism/slurs/discrimination/hate speech, don't bring it up, don't link to stuff containing it.
This refers to anything based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, political affiliation, gender, sexual preferences, etc.
This rule doesn't have any sort of 'insider club' exclusion, just because you're a Mexican doesn't mean you can use derogatory slang about Mexicans, the same goes for any other race/religion/sexual orientation etc..

2. Avoid politics/religion and other topics likely to incite people

Since our goal is to be mostly happy fun times land, it is recommended that any serious controversial topics (politics, abortion rights, same sex marriage, drugs legalization etc.) be avoided. Discussions on these topics will generally be be shut down and bans handed out if things get out of hand.

3. Try not to offend

Using "softening" language like "Please don't take offense (offensive statement)" usually doesn't soften the blow, and may actually make things worse.
If you are uncertain, but think it likely something will be taken as offensive, keep it to yourself.
If you make a comment that wasn't intended as offensive, but which has obviously bothered someone, apologize and change topics/avoid similar comments.

4. No ganging up on people & no trolling newbies/strangers

Don't gang up on people because they not part of your group/express an unpopular opinion/whatever. Legitimate discussion is fine but don't jump in someone's shit just because your friends/a bunch of other people are arguing with them or whatever.
Do not troll or otherwise screw with someone simply because they are new or you don't know who they are.
If someone really is trolling or is just being a complete boneheaded or troublemaker, do not engage them. Get an admin or send an admin a copy of the problematic chat.
Ganging up on someone over a disagreement or someone having a differing (but legitimate) view isn't cool and won't be tolerated.

5. No advertising/No Spamming/No Scamming/No Auctions, raffles, lottos etc. not approved by admins.

We don't advertise our servers elsewhere, don't advertise others here.

We don't want anything you are selling, we're not interested in your website/steam group/magazine/clan etc.

Trade chat is allowed, however do not be excessive.
Repeatedly spamming the same spam (trading or otherwise) over and over will get you banned.
If asked to stop, stop, whether you feel it was excessive or not.

We do not allow random people to hold auctions or raffles or lottos or anything of the sort. If a regular wants to do something similar, in a manner that allows for third party verification of the results (no "name in a hat" nonsense), then talk to the admins about maybe setting something up. Otherwise only officially sponsored events run or endorsed by admins are allowed.

Do not participate in events raffle/lotto events by random strangers in the chat/forums/servers. Most are scams.

6. If there is an issue a problem with a topic, specific people, someone causing problems, spamming, violations of any of the above rules or anything questionable

Explain the issue and ask the person to stop.
If that fails, or if there is an issue regarding what is/isn't or should/shouldn't be allowed, contact an admin in private and talk about it, don't push the matter in chat.
Admins with admin access in chat have a star next to their names in the chatroom.
However, people are expected to listen to admins whether they have chatroom admin access or not.
For that matter, if anyone reasonably asks that a topic be changed because it is making them uncomfortable or whatever, you should generally oblige, if you feel it's unfair/unwarranted, talk to an admin about it.

7. If you need an admin

Admins with admin access in chat have a star next to their names in the chatroom, otherwise see here:

Octo has the final call on all things related to TF2Newbs. If you have a problem with a decision, an action, or an admin. or any other issue that hasn't been resolved, you should take it up with him.

FAQ

A. Comments made in jest to a friend who is aware that you are joking are fine , but any threats of real world violence or other harm are not allowed.
