Oh hey, it’s also time to get your Saxxy submissions on!

TF2 Update, Oct 13, 2016

Posted on: October 13th, 2016 by Obey

So the Pyro-themed content isn’t here yet. And the annual Halloween update isn’t here yet either. But Valve are working on matchmaking still, as well as MvM, and who knows what else. Here’s the rundown:

  • (1) Halloween Event Maps: You can now call a temporary truce during a fight with Monoculus or Merasmus
    • Community maps now have a ConVar to force a truce whenever any Halloween boss fight begins
  • (2) The Golden Joystick Awards now features a $1 game sale for anyone who votes
  • There’s a chance that you can opt-in to a survey after you complete a Casual match or a Comp match
  • Some community requests have been implemented:
    • Energy weapons will now correctly impact pumpkin bombs, RD robots, and Merasmus props
  • Updates for the maps Snakewater, Millstone Event, and Sunshine

See the full patch notes for more information. Expect the next annual Halloween Event to launch sometime next week!

1. What’s This About a Truce…?!

Remember when you played a Halloween Event map, and some big boss monster spawns… yet when your team turns to focus the boss, the other team kills you with your back turned?

illuminati__monoculus__is_unamused___tf2__by_mangledarobowitswag-d9i2g7b

Valve has released a way for community maps to enable, or even force, a truce between RED and BLU while there’s a boss monster roaming the map. I assume players will use the votemenu on Valve maps, but community maps now have the options to require the truce if they wish to implement it.

Head admin |N| Octo informed me today that Halloween Event maps on TF2Newbs servers will force a truce during these boss fights. If you want a TF2Newbs Halloween Event map to not have the forced truce setting, please let us know in the forums.

Hey, do you need a guide about the various TF2 Halloween Event maps? Here you go!

The $1 “Golden Joystick Awards” Game Bundle

The Golden Joystick Awards is in its 34th year, handing out awards based on democratically driven voting for beloved video games. To spur voting, this year they have partnered with online digital game distributor Green Man Gaming to offering a deal: After you submit your vote, you are taken to a page where you can buy digital copies of three games for just $1 (or 1 euro, or 1 pound). That’s $1 total for all three games, and you can choose whether to purchase Steam keys or another online platform (such as PS4 or Origin). The games are:

*The Spec Ops game requires a Green Man Gaming account (free), but it seems to be possible to earn back the money you spent on the package as well. So until the most important election in the world this November–the Saxxy Awards–you can practice your voting skills for the GJA.

**Doing my due research, the random game may not necessarily be a Steam key. It could be Origin, gog, etc. depending on the random game received. Could be literally any game, even one you already own.

The awards voting, as well as the $1 bundle, are available through Halloween, October 31st.

TF2 Item Price Updates: Sept 10 2015

Posted on: September 10th, 2015 by Obey

News Bits

  • The Gun Mettle Campaign Pass has been removed from the Mann Co. Store. The Gun Mettle Season ends September 30th.
  • Have you read TF2 Comics #5 yet? Published on Aug 31, it follows Miss Pauling as she continues to recruit the nine mercenaries, following the orders of the Administrator in its typical nonsensical fashion.
  • I neglected to mention earlier that The Saxxy Awards are coming. Submission rules are here.

TF2 Item Prices

Metal

 1 ref = US$0.13

Keys

Market: $2.35 to $2.45 (was $2.40 to $2.50)

Backpack: 16 ref

Keys had been trading for around 19 ref until the Gun Mettle update launched in mid-July. Since then, the price dropped and has been slowly rebounding.

Buds

Market: $8 to $9 (was $9 to $10)

Backpack: 3.5 keys and falling (was 4 keys)

With the rise of the Steam Market to facilitate currency trading, perhaps fewer users bother to trade for buds, although plenty of users still desire the accessory. Be aware of this, if you’ve have a standing sell price for an unusual valued in buds.

Gun Mettle Keys

Market: $2.75 and up (was $2.50)

Backpack: 1.1 keys or 1 key + 2 ref

With each patch, the price will spike into the $2.90 ranged on the Market, then slowly fall back toward $2.50 once more. Users without Steam Funds generally trading with a key plus some metal. Also, Powerhouse cases are trading for about $0.15, and Concealed Killer cases for $0.06.

Price Comparison

As I observed before: Factory New is worth five to ten times as much as other grades, and is what collectors are keeping.

Since Gun Mettle ends September 30th, these weapons will be Limited and no longer obtainable afterward. It is not known whether the cases can be opened, or if the weapons can still Traded Up afterward. Trade Ups have removed a lot of weapons from the Market; few Grade 5 or Grade 6 weps are even for sale on the Market.

TF2 Update: 10/1/14

Posted on: October 1st, 2014 by Obey

NOTE: Currently, servers #13 and #27 (UK) are down.  The usual server mechanics have been notified, and I’m sure everything will be up in less than a day. –[N] Obey

Here’s what’s going on:

  1. The 2014 Saxxy winners have been announced! Click the link to watch the nominated videos.
  2. All TF2 servers can now allow a vote whether to activate/deactivate player-count autobalancing only.
  3. All TF2 servers now, by default, allow teamtalk to be on (allowing dead players to be heard by living players).
  4. Muting a player now applies to text chat as well as voice chat.
    • Previously, this was not available without SourceMod or other third-party scripts (I think).
  5. Minor changes to rd_asteroid

Full Patch Notes

  • Improved memory usage for Mac clients
  • Fixed an exploit that allowed item nametags to go beyond the 40 character limit
  • Fixed a bug where reflected rocket explosions from non-stock flamethrowers would cause the flame sound to loop
  • tf_teamtalk is now on by default – the dead can talk to the living
  • When you mute a player, the mute settings now apply to text chat as well as voice chat. If you want the previous behavior, change convar cl_mute_all_comms to 0.
  • More weapon models are now loaded on demand to reduce overall memory usage
  • Added “Enable/Disable Auto TeamBalancevotes
  • Updated rd_asteroid
    • Increased overtime to 45 seconds
    • Added more sound cues when overtime starts

TF2 Update: 9/25/14

Posted on: September 25th, 2014 by Obey

By the way, have you played the beta maps Asteroid or Cactus Canyon lately? They’re really coming along, and much more fun than when they were first launched.  Today’s patch doesn’t change their terrain at all, but does add a few wrinkles to the play style for Asteroid.

The short version for this patch:

  1. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite TF2 short for the Saxxy Awards! Voting ends 11:59 pm PDT on Monday, Sept. 29th.
  2. You can now buy Limited Late Summer Crate Keys (the usual US$2.49), to unlock #86 crates of the same name.
    • About half of the contents will be Strange, and all of the contents will be Limited (unable to be crafted or bought in the future).
    • Crates cannot be opened after October 13, 2014.
    • See the crate drop list below. There is one cosmetic for each class, and one all-class cosmetic: the Pocket Heavy.
  3. Items you have received now carry a “NEW!” banner in your inventory, until you mouse over them.
  4. In the middle of a match that is attempting to rebalance the server population, you will immediately respawn if you are either auto-balanced, or if you voluntarily change sides.
    • Of course, this doesn’t work in modes like Arena or MvM.
  5. Limited Items (i.e. items that cannot be dropped, crafted, or bought from the Mann Co. Store, but could be uncrated):
    • Now the entire text line is colored bright yellow, as opposed to just the word Limited, in the item’s text line.
      • For example: “Limited Level 53 Hat“.
    • Retired hats are now properly identified as Limited items.
  6. Asteroid has added sounds, adjusted return time for stolen reactor cores, and a 45-second Overtime to allow the enemy to attempt to steal the winning team’s core.
