TF2 Update, Oct 13, 2016

Posted on: October 13th, 2016 by Obey

So the Pyro-themed content isn’t here yet. And the annual Halloween update isn’t here yet either. But Valve are working on matchmaking still, as well as MvM, and who knows what else. Here’s the rundown:

  • (1) Halloween Event Maps: You can now call a temporary truce during a fight with Monoculus or Merasmus
    • Community maps now have a ConVar to force a truce whenever any Halloween boss fight begins
  • (2) The Golden Joystick Awards now features a $1 game sale for anyone who votes
  • There’s a chance that you can opt-in to a survey after you complete a Casual match or a Comp match
  • Some community requests have been implemented:
    • Energy weapons will now correctly impact pumpkin bombs, RD robots, and Merasmus props
  • Updates for the maps Snakewater, Millstone Event, and Sunshine

See the full patch notes for more information. Expect the next annual Halloween Event to launch sometime next week!

1. What’s This About a Truce…?!

Remember when you played a Halloween Event map, and some big boss monster spawns… yet when your team turns to focus the boss, the other team kills you with your back turned?

Valve has released a way for community maps to enable, or even force, a truce between RED and BLU while there’s a boss monster roaming the map. I assume players will use the votemenu on Valve maps, but community maps now have the options to require the truce if they wish to implement it.

Head admin |N| Octo informed me today that Halloween Event maps on TF2Newbs servers will force a truce during these boss fights. If you want a TF2Newbs Halloween Event map to not have the forced truce setting, please let us know in the forums.

Hey, do you need a guide about the various TF2 Halloween Event maps? Here you go!

The $1 “Golden Joystick Awards” Game Bundle

The Golden Joystick Awards is in its 34th year, handing out awards based on democratically driven voting for beloved video games. To spur voting, this year they have partnered with online digital game distributor Green Man Gaming to offering a deal: After you submit your vote, you are taken to a page where you can buy digital copies of three games for just $1 (or 1 euro, or 1 pound). That’s $1 total for all three games, and you can choose whether to purchase Steam keys or another online platform (such as PS4 or Origin). The games are:

*The Spec Ops game requires a Green Man Gaming account (free), but it seems to be possible to earn back the money you spent on the package as well. So until the most important election in the world this November–the Saxxy Awards–you can practice your voting skills for the GJA.

**Doing my due research, the random game may not necessarily be a Steam key. It could be Origin, gog, etc. depending on the random game received. Could be literally any game, even one you already own.

The awards voting, as well as the $1 bundle, are available through Halloween, October 31st.

TF2 Patch Update: 9/17/14

Posted on: September 18th, 2014 by Obey

Hey, new stuff!

  1. Halloween/Full Moon is in effect for the next seven calendar days.
  2. “Limited” is now an item quality, to stand for items that were once craftable or purchasable and no longer can be.
  3. There are five promotional Halloween/Full Moon restricted items that can be earned if you purchase the game Alien: Isolation from the Steam Store before October 7th, 2014. This one-player survival horror game is $49.99, with a $17.99 upgrade to Season Pass.
  4. The following new items and changes to the item drop list are thus:
    • Two new crates, the Director’s Cut Reel and the Limited Late Summer Crate (#86) are added to the drop list.
      • The Limited Late Summer Crate cannot yet be opened, required a yet-unreleased special key.
      • The Director’s Cut Reel is like a combination of the Strongbox and the Audition Reel: It will drop one of four taunts when opened with a standard key, but you can input words to use to “roll” for different items. It drops from the same drop list of taunts as the Audition Reel.
    • The Audition Reel is removed from the drop list.
    • Items from the all-cosmetic Strongbox Pack, released back in February, are now craftable and buyable from the Mann Co. Store.
  5. The rest of the patch notes.
    • The taunt for the Scorch Shot now shoots a projectile.  Apparently that was a bug!
    • New sounds for the Boston Basher.

1. Halloween Mode On for the Next Week

Why? Probably has something to do with the Alien-themed promotional items (see 3.).

2. “Limited” Item Quality

Items that cannot be crafted or bought in the Mann Co. Store (but had once been craftable or purchasable) are now given a new item quality prefix of “Limited” Quantity. This item quality doesn’t change the color of the item text, but the prefix is assumably added to all items to let people know that Valve seem to be making two promises: 1) More copies of a discontinued item will not be available, thus preserving the rarity (and thus the market value) of those items; and 2) Valve are helping the fanbase to easily identify items that are rare, or at least, cannot simply be bought or earned again.  Hopefully Valve remembers to tag all applicable items with the prefix!

3. Alien: Isolation Promo Items for TF2!

Now you can be Amanda Ripley, looking for your mama and trying not to become alien food and/or wear new Alien-themed hats in Team Fortress 2!   There are five items; three for the Scout, and two for the Pyro.  The Scout items dress him up in an Alien costume:

Here’s the nifty part: one of the Pyro’s two items is a reskinned flamethrower! And a Pyro wearing both of his promo items will do more damage to Scouts that are wearing a set of three-Alien-promo items! But I don’t think that the three Scout items count as a set (like the Pyro’s), nor do they have any special effect.  All five items are Halloween/Full Moon restricted.

4. New Crates!

Yay!  But they can’t be opened yet.  Boo!

I’ll post an item list here when we can open them….
