End of the Line TF2 Patch — 12/9/14

Posted on: December 9th, 2014 by Obey

Between a major Monday night TF2 update, and some minor updates I haven’t covered from the last few weeks, we have a lot to cover!  As usual, the summary is on top, and the full patch notes are at the end of the post.

  1. Packhead is no longer hosting a 24/7 Christmas music stream here, thru December 25th.  Thanks Pack!
    • Clink on the M3U button at the top-right to begin streaming.  (Works with iTunes too!)
  2. (12/9/14) The “End of the Line” Community Update is now live (see below)! Read its splash page and watch the 13-minute animated short movie.
    • Added EotL Crate Keys, Piles of EotL Keys, and Random EotL Keys. They do not expire.
    • See below for the list of 21 community cosmetics found in the End of the Line crate.
    • One weapon reskin: the melee Crossing Guard, a railroad crossbuck complete with lights.
      • Equippable by all classes except Engineer and Spy, and deals stock melee damage.
    • Added a Pyro taunt: Pool Party.
    • Added Duck Journal and Duck Tokens for the End of the Line event (see below).
      • You must purchase a Duck Journal from the Mann Co. Store if you wish to participate in tracking duckies collected.
      • Collect Duck Tokens, and add them to the Duck Journal to level it up.  Duck Tokens are also giftable and can be bought in the Mann Co. Store.
    • Four new Unusual Effects have been added. Any Unusuals unboxed from EotL crates receive one of these four Effects only.  These Unusual Effects can only be obtained on Unusuals found in EotL crates.
    • NOTE: The entire update–the movie, the cosmetics, the duckies–are community-designed!
  3. (12/3/14) Added the TF Tomb Contest 2014 winning cosmetic items: Jungle Booty, Crown of the Old Kingdom, and Tomb Readers
  4. (11/13/14) Added End of the Line Crates.
    • EotL Crates do not expire. Items uncrated before January 5, 2015 will receive an “early supporter” tag on the item.
    • RoboCrate and associated items have been renamed Robo Community Crates, etc.
    • The Alien: Isolation promo items can now be bought in the Mann Co. Store.

1. The “End of the Line” Update

EotL Community Crates

EotL Keys (and Random EotL Keys) are US$2.49 in the Mann Co. Store. EotL Piles of Keys are US$57.27.

Opening an EotL crate drops one of 21 possible cosmetics, a new Pyro taunt, the Crossing Guard melee reskin, or the roughly 1% chance of an Unusual item with one of four EotL-specific Unusual Effects! A specific item has a roughly 4.3% chance of dropping. Some of the items uncrated will be Strange quality.

Oh Look–Another Melee Reskin!

Crossing_Guard

Yep, it’s the Crossing Guard, a stock-reskin melee weapon equippable by all classes except Engineer and Spy. It is not currently craftable; the only way to obtain it at this time is to uncrate it from an EotL crate. But craft numbers have been enabled, so perhaps they will be craftable in the future.

Get Duckies

Carry your very own Duck Journal on your chest while you fight, and earn Duckstreaks that function as if you had a Killstreaker weapon equipped! Killing enemies also causes ducks to drop, which quack when picked up and are added to a Duck XP Level.

Duck_Journal

You must purchase a Duck Journal from the Mann Co. Store (US$4.99) to participate in this month-long, duck-collecting event. Basically, you collect ducks by killing enemies, and have a specialized Duckstreaker announcement in the killfeed.

Purchase Duck Tokens (US$1.99 from the Mann Co. Store) to level-up your Duck Journal up to a maximum of Level Five. Higher levels causes more ducks to drop from killed enemies. Piles of Duck Tokens are US$45.77, and function like the Piles of Keys tools (gives away one token to up to 23 random players on your current server). So do Random Duck Tokens Gifts (US$1.99). Duck Journals and Tokens are giftable after several days.

Statistics from duck collecting are being kept via leaderboards (much like the Dueling Game “Season”). Ducks will cease dropping on January 5th, 2015.  Is this just a shameless money grab? Who knows–but are those duck eyes hypnotizing?! If you are enjoying the new content, spring for a Duck Journal and Tokens so the creators of the content can get paid.

Snowplow…?

An attack/defend map, cp_snowplow, was intended for release with this update, reenacting the events of the EotL movie in the identical location.  Apparently it has not been included in the update.  Stay tuned.

Post-Halloween Patches: 11/6/14

Posted on: November 5th, 2014 by Obey

Hey Newbs! I hope you enjoyed the bumper cars, the second coming of the cap-camping Sniper and the aggressive sentry on the final point on Doomsday, and the new cosmetics.  I didn’t update for the October 30th patch, so I’m updating that patch with yesterday’s “apparently that was a bug” bugfixes.  Here’s the TL;DR version and the full patch notes.

Oh–and the Newbs are telling me that most hats are very bugged: lots of hats suspended in midair and lots of other after-death glitches.  Somebody needs to go fix the hats again….

[EDIT: Includes the 11/6/14 patch also.]

  1. Valve is asking its gamers to create promotional, classic “Tomb Raider” content.
  2. There is a new server ConVar setting to allow/disallow random critical hits for melee weapons.
  3. Updated the target reticle to move the health icon to just above the targeted figure, as opposed to the floating nameplate.
    • Added a ConVar to disable the reticle, so it goes back to the floating nameplate as before.
  4. The four promotional cosmetics for Alien: Isolation are now craftable, tradable and giftable.
  5. Updated the Necro Smasher so Strange Parts and Halloween Spells can be attached.
    • A Strange Necro Smasher is currently only possible via a Strangifier constructed via Chemisty Set.
  6. Updated the Rescue Ranger so other players do not block line-of-sight for its sentry distance pickup ability.
    • [EDIT: 11/6] Also fixed the Rescue Ranger picking up buildings through walls.
  7. Various bugfixes:
    • Fixed the Spycicle sometimes not giving the Spy the usual fire resistance.
    • Fixed standard knife stab to play correctly (and not the backstab animation) when crits are disabled.
    • Fixed disguise Spies not showing the correct health to enemies.
    • Fixed the Sniper getting stuck in a zoomed-in FOV after taunting while zooming.
    • Fixed Helltower having the same spell drop list as Carnival of Carnage.
    • Updated Merasmus’s curses to remove all projectiles and empties sentries of ammo whenever players are teleported to the main point of the map.
    • [EDIT: 11/6] Fixed sentries having ammo when still being constructed during Merasmus’s curse.
    • Diasbled server auto-balances during end-of-round minigames.

TF2 Patch Update: 9/17/14

Posted on: September 18th, 2014 by Obey

Hey, new stuff!

  1. Halloween/Full Moon is in effect for the next seven calendar days.
  2. “Limited” is now an item quality, to stand for items that were once craftable or purchasable and no longer can be.
  3. There are five promotional Halloween/Full Moon restricted items that can be earned if you purchase the game Alien: Isolation from the Steam Store before October 7th, 2014. This one-player survival horror game is $49.99, with a $17.99 upgrade to Season Pass.
  4. The following new items and changes to the item drop list are thus:
    • Two new crates, the Director’s Cut Reel and the Limited Late Summer Crate (#86) are added to the drop list.
      • The Limited Late Summer Crate cannot yet be opened, required a yet-unreleased special key.
      • The Director’s Cut Reel is like a combination of the Strongbox and the Audition Reel: It will drop one of four taunts when opened with a standard key, but you can input words to use to “roll” for different items. It drops from the same drop list of taunts as the Audition Reel.
    • The Audition Reel is removed from the drop list.
    • Items from the all-cosmetic Strongbox Pack, released back in February, are now craftable and buyable from the Mann Co. Store.
  5. The rest of the patch notes.
    • The taunt for the Scorch Shot now shoots a projectile.  Apparently that was a bug!
    • New sounds for the Boston Basher.

1. Halloween Mode On for the Next Week

Why? Probably has something to do with the Alien-themed promotional items (see 3.).

2. “Limited” Item Quality

Items that cannot be crafted or bought in the Mann Co. Store (but had once been craftable or purchasable) are now given a new item quality prefix of “Limited” Quantity. This item quality doesn’t change the color of the item text, but the prefix is assumably added to all items to let people know that Valve seem to be making two promises: 1) More copies of a discontinued item will not be available, thus preserving the rarity (and thus the market value) of those items; and 2) Valve are helping the fanbase to easily identify items that are rare, or at least, cannot simply be bought or earned again.  Hopefully Valve remembers to tag all applicable items with the prefix!

3. Alien: Isolation Promo Items for TF2!

Now you can be Amanda Ripley, looking for your mama and trying not to become alien food and/or wear new Alien-themed hats in Team Fortress 2!   There are five items; three for the Scout, and two for the Pyro.  The Scout items dress him up in an Alien costume:

Here’s the nifty part: one of the Pyro’s two items is a reskinned flamethrower! And a Pyro wearing both of his promo items will do more damage to Scouts that are wearing a set of three-Alien-promo items! But I don’t think that the three Scout items count as a set (like the Pyro’s), nor do they have any special effect.  All five items are Halloween/Full Moon restricted.

4. New Crates!

Yay!  But they can’t be opened yet.  Boo!

I’ll post an item list here when we can open them….
