News You Can Use: 5/31/2015

Posted on: May 31st, 2015 by Obey

There hasn’t been much in the way of patches in TF2, so let’s spread some news!

o. UPDATE 6/1/15: There is a new “Mysterious” badge locked in your Steam badges list.  Gee, that might have something to do with the Steam Summer Sale.  Get your gems together…!

1. Rumor is, the Steam Summer Sale starts June 11th! It will run for two weeks, and then there will be some encore sales afterward.

2. Back in April, Valve declared that they are working on ways to implement matchmaking (i.e. a rating system that measures your skill) in competitive play. In other words, an official Valve way of identifying your competitive playing skill without having to graduate through ranks to reach the top. Now, if they could just do this with regular pubbers!

3. PC Gamer’s May 4th article about TF2′s longevity, and their March 12th article about games that are great for kids while being somewhat educational also.

4. Strange Kritzkriegs are still selling in the US$40 to $50 range. They’re only a ~1% drop from a #92 crate (or a 20% drop from a #30 crate), but since falling from US$75 to $100, the price has stabilized for months. But hey, if you get lucky, quicksell it so you can have some money for the Steam Sale….

What Are Limited User Accounts?

Posted on: April 18th, 2015 by Obey

Steam has made some changes to the client software in an attempt to reduce the number of phisher/hacker accounts. Rest assured that the following doesn’t apply to you if you have ever spent at least US$5 lifetime at the Steam Store.

UPDATE 5/31/15:  Valve explains their reasons for having limited users to PC Gamer.

A limited user is any Steam account that has not yet spent at least US$5.00 at the Steam Store; such a user is similar to a universal free-to-play account. Limited User accounts have had many of the functions of the Steam client removed–mostly to prevent phishers and hackers from creating throwaway Steam accounts. Among the features that are now disabled for Limited User accounts include:

  • Sending friend invites
  • Voting or posting on anything in Steam Workshop, Greenlight, or Reviews for a game/software
  • Opening text chat windows with another user or groups
  • Gaining Steam Profile Levels and Steam Trading Cards
  • Participating in the Steam Market

The above restrictions are lifted if the user buys a game(s) of at least $5 value in the Steam Store for yourself or as a gift, buys at least $5 worth of Steam Wallet funds, or adds a prepurchased Steam card to the account.

Limited User accounts can still play free-to-play games on Steam, promotional trial games like Free Weekends, receive and play gift games from another person, trade games and/or in-game items, and activate promotional CD keys (like from hardware companies or a Humble Bundle). However, none of these actions will earn full user access; at least $5 of funds and/or content must be purchased from Steam (or a Steam card from a third-party, and then applied) to remove the Limited User restrictions. Again, receiving a game(s) or in-game items as gifts will not remove the restrictions.

TF2 Patch: 3/12/2015

Posted on: March 13th, 2015 by Obey

New strange weapons and new taunts in TF2! And now you should expect to see more taunts going forward….

  1. Three new taunts! Also, taunts can not be created in the Steam Workshop.
  2. Crate #92 now drops, with new stranges available.
  3. More Mannpower CTF mode updates.
  4. Reduced the latency of voice audio.

1. New Taunts!

The Scout gets one new taunt: the Boston Breakdance, where the Scout goes into a wild dance. The Sniper gets two new taunts: the Killer Solo, where he reprises his saxophone solo from the Expiration Date short movie; and the Most Wanted, where the Sniper crosses a name off his hit list with a marker. As of now, these taunts are only available for purchase in the Mann Co. Store.

2. Crate #92

12 weapons are available in this crate in Strange quality, and nine of them are Strange for the first time!

In other news, the Strange Kritzkrieg had been trading for $65-$75 on the Steam Market for months, since it had only been available from the very rare (and now retired) Crate #30. Not surprisingly, the price of one has dropped into the $20-$40 range, but expect it to drop more as supply begins to catch up to demand.

3. Mannpower CTF Updates!

A new Thunder Mountain map, converted for Capture the Flag play, is launched for the Mannpower mode.  If you haven’t played the Mannpower mode, it has a feel like TF2′s ancestor Quake III: Arena, with powerups and grappling hooks added to CTF play.

A new powerup, Knockout, has also been added, granting the following benefits:

  • Restricts the carrier to Melee and Grappling Hook only
  • Max health increased by 150
  • Immune to airblast and damage pushback
  • Melee weapon always crits and forcibly shoves the victim away
  • Melee hit forces the victim to drop their powerup or the flag if they have it
  • 4X melee damage to buildings

A few other tweaks have been added to Mannpower, including random melee critical hits have been restored to the game (but not random crits to other weapons), and being able to use the grappling hook as a weapon to grapple you close to enemies and to inflict bleeding on your target.

Stay tuned for a possible TF2 Newbs Guide to the Mannpower Mode….
